We’ve all joined a course at some time or other and found out afterwards that the learnings were invaluable. We have perhaps just enjoyed the hour long session because it has perhaps confirmed that we dod know what we’re doing after all! Any good course will give us plenty to think about.</p><h2 id="8b0ecaa7-3ae7-4de9-9537-952c9cbdb862" data-toc-id="8b0ecaa7-3ae7-4de9-9537-952c9cbdb862">This is a little different - you are investing in yourself</h2><p>If you’re thinking of signing up to Work Well Now, that’s because you are going to make an investment in your growth, and that means you want your investment to pay you back, and pay you back big.</p><p>And that’s where the Johari Window comes in. This is how you can pinpoint where you want to go - not to a single course, but to your next area of growth. This is how you will determine whether you want to focus on becoming more efficient, or if challenges are going to be more your line.</p><h2 id="6e5e39a3-70ee-4fbf-934b-8a473b49ab25" data-toc-id="6e5e39a3-70ee-4fbf-934b-8a473b49ab25">The Johari Window focuses the mind</h2><p><span style="color: rgb(40, 38, 71)">This is a tool we use with clients who come to us for coaching when they aren’t 100% sure what they want to work on. We love it because it is seemingly simple, but it pushes each of us to do a couple of things; some self-reflection, and some feedback gathering. It is a fantastic way to focus our minds on development and growth. To ensure you can get the best from using this tool, in this document we will guide you through with additional insights and suggestions.</span></p><h2 id="eae2cf11-b603-4d1f-9e5c-c110f893c944" data-toc-id="eae2cf11-b603-4d1f-9e5c-c110f893c944">Right up to retirement, we are on a journey to uncover our strengths and challenges</h2><p>When we start our careers, we don’t really know where our strengths are going to lie. Even if we’ve wanted to do the same job since childhood - common in doctors, vets and other vocations - we don’t know what we’ll find a doddle, and which parts we will find challenging. To illustrate with an extreme example, we might imagine ourselves as the family doctor, only to find we can’t stand the patients!</p><p>This is an onion that unpeels over the course of a career. There are things we know about ourselves and that others know about us too - this area can be really quite small as we embark on our career. There will be things that others know about us, that we don’t know ourselves. The first time I read that phrase, I imagined only the things we do that annoy others without us knowing it, but it can just as equally mean things in which we excel, but don’t know they are a strength. Then there are some extremely interesting areas to explore - the things we know about ourselves, but aren’t obvious to others. I think this is an amazing area for growth for anyone who wants to succeed authentically. We so often hold back the bits about ourselves that we imagine others will dislike or mistrust, only to discover that they are something that actually forms our individual reputation. Then, most intriguingly, there are the things that neither we nor others know about ourselves - these form the source of the career we will have but cannot yet imagine. While many CEOs have always known they wanted to be the boss, the same is not true for the rest of the C-suite. </p><h2 id="91c05f9f-390e-4cc9-b425-ef4a520a25de" data-toc-id="91c05f9f-390e-4cc9-b425-ef4a520a25de">You aren’t going to do this alone, but you are going to ask people you trust to help</h2><p>You populate your Johari Window through self-reflection and feedback from others. However, this isn’t a performance review - the JW doesn’t ask you to get 360 feedback! When Jen and I were talking this through, we both named the same three people that we know would go straight to someone they thought didn’t like them much to get an “honest opinion”. Brave though that is, it isn’t really how this tool works. The Johari Window is a supportive exercise, designed to ease you open rather than blast you apart, so while there is a feedback gathering part to it, it specifically asks you to speak to people you trust. You will be asking two or three people for some input, but they need to know you quite well and you are looking for supportive responses.</p><h2 id="156f8c21-103f-42cc-81a3-39a65afc4d08" data-toc-id="156f8c21-103f-42cc-81a3-39a65afc4d08">Please be patient with our technology</h2><p>We aren’t able to send you straight through to the documents. This is a site that holds video and audio content, but it doesn’t hold files. Because you’ve given us your details, we will get an email saying that you’ve requested access. Once or twice a day we will sweep up requests and send out the files. Ezycourse is a marvellous beast, but it cannot do it all. If you haven’t had your files within 48 hours of signing up, please send us an email to chase us up - we won’t take this the wrong way.
